According to the Guardian newspaper research consistently points to the enormous difficulty and long waiting times for accessing talking therapy services through the NHS. And the Times reports that a number of patients with mental health problems are waiting more than three months for talking therapies such as counselling.

Due to the pandemic, the NHS’s focus is, more than ever, on hospitals, inpatients, vaccinations, and intensive care – along with the people who work in these areas. Adrian James, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, called the extent of the mental health crisis “terrifying”, saying it will likely get a lot worse before it gets better, with services at a very real risk of being overrun by the sheer volume of people needing help.

The fact that large numbers of frontline NHS workers are also experiencing anxiety and depression only adds to the severity of the crisis.

It takes particular courage to reach out for psychological support, especially if it is your first time. It is a true leap of faith to open up and trust someone. It is therefore incredibly difficult to be told you have to wait weeks or even months and it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed and disappointed.

If you need to talk to a therapist soon then reach out to Feelya therapists and start improving your quality of life when the time is right for you.
